People's Justice Party of Malaysia (PKR), an opposition political party held a flag raising ceremony to commemorate Malaysia Day at Padang Merdeka, Kuching, Malaysia. 16/09/2010.
State PKR adviser YB Dominique Ng said that PKR would raise the Jalur Gemilang and the state flag and read out the Malaysia proclamation in a simple ceremony.The party invited Dayak dancers, a Hadrah group from the Malay community and one from the Chinese community to hold cultural performances on the day.
Dominique said he had applied for a police permit but lamented that he had been given the run-around.
He claimed that the police had told him to first apply for permission from the Kuching City North Commission and that this was awaiting approval.
“I don’t understand. We are not doing anything illegal. Padang Merdeka is a public place and we are doing a patriotic thing by raising the flag, which is for the good of the people,” he said.
He added that the state-level Malaysia Day celebrations, which will take place at Perpaduan Stadium tonight, should be held at Padang Merdeka where the proclamation of Malaysia was made.
