PlanetSolar - the Largest Solar Ship in the World
The largest solar ship in the world PlanetSolar has sailed into the Gulf of Mexico with the mission to show a solution to climate changes to the creators of our future who met in Cancun.
PlanetSolar is 31 meters long and 15 meters wide, it is the largest solar ship in the planet, whose engines run on electric voltage collected by 500 square meters of solar panels. The 38 000 modern photocells made by Sun Power have 22 percent efficiency and are capable of generating 103.4 kW of solar energy, although about 20 kW is enough for the largest solar ship to reach a speed of eight knots, which is around 15 km/h.
This technological wonder of the weight of 60 tons was produced in Knierim Yacht Club in Kiel, Germany, and its creators, Swiss Raphaël Domjan and Frenchman Gerard d'Aboville believe it will become the fastest boat to circumnavigate the planet. Gérard d'Aboville was the first man to successfully crossed the Atlantic in a boat rowing with paddles.
The project costed about 16 million euros and serves as a reminder of the fact that the greatest discoveries of the planet were acheived in the shipbuilding industry. "We seem to have forgotten how clean this transport may be" said team PlanetSolar and concludes: "Ships are the most used means of transporting goods and produce the total emission of CO2 per year of 6 percent (1.4 billion tons of CO2 in 2008), which is double the amount created by airplane transport."
