Court throws out Umi Hafilda’s suit against Malaysiakini
BREAKING NEWS Justice Zabariah Mohd Yusof strikes out the suit after both Umi Hafilda’s and the defendants’ lawyers are not present when the case is called. The High Court in Kuala Lumpur today struck out the RM100 million suit filed by Umi Hafilda Ali against businessperson Nor Azman Abdullah @ Baginda Minda and Malaysiakini.
The matter was scheduled for case management today, after it was filed last month amidst heavy publicity.
Justice Zabariah Mohd Yusof struck out the suit after both the plaintiff and the defendants’ lawyers failed to present themselves when the case was called.
Umi Hafilda also was absent.
Umi Hafilda, who had filed the suit through the firm of Sahrihan & Hamdan, had claimed that Baginda had, in the lobby of Parliament, uttered words that were defamatory of her, among others, that she was a woman of loose moral.
Malaysiakini, she alleged further, had negligently published an article on the defamatory words used against her on its portal on March 15 this year.
Besides the RM100 million in damages and other relief deemed fit by the court, she had also sought an injunction to prevent the two defendants from continuing to defame her.
